Eleni Zisimatos

Eleni Zisimatos is a Canadian poet, born and raised in Montreal. With a background in Medieval literature, her work ranges from experimental to lyrical, with an emphasis on loss and spirituality. She has been a finalist in the Santa Fe Writer’s competition and the Irving Layton Award for her fiction.

In 2002 she was nominated for a National Magazine Award for poetry and has published widely in Canadian, UK, and US journals. She is Editor-in-Chief of Vallum, along with Joshua Auerbach, and is Vice-president of VSFAALE. She lives in Montreal with her son.

TO PERISH

mimicked by the blood in
arteries

crossing of good with evil
blindness

old languages tell myths
truth obscured by too many
variations

real prophet, lost
sanctity no longer exists

in this post-revelation
this pure

agonistic telling of pseudo-saints
